Free up your stuck thinking patterns! (July 2008)

Very often clients come to me with anxiety, depression, hopelessness, self-sabotage and other forms of general ‘stuckness’. Here are some of the most popular ways that people think when they are in a ‘negative’ or ‘pessimistic’ frame of mind. These are not ‘weak’ ways of thinking, just the opposite - as they can be strong enough to keep individuals stuck where they don’t want to be, sometimes for a very, very, long time…..

Read the table below to see just how you can switch your negative 'stuck' thinking over to a new, positive way.

Clients of mine will be familiar with this list, I often refer to it humorously!

Feel free to contact me for detailed explanations of any line, more than happy to help.

Stuck thinking                                              Free thinking
Hopeless and helpless                                                  - Walking with grace and power
Yes, but…..But, yes!                                                     - Pivot the sentence around the ‘but’
What if…                                                                       - What if not? How possible is that? How likely?
‘All or nothing at all’ thinking                                      - Steps, process, not got it all just ‘yet’
It’s just my brain/ happening to me….                         - Take responsibility for running own brain
Negative rehearsal/ expectations                                - Positive rehearsal/ expectations
I need a miracle…..                                                      - Learn new disciplines and responses
Can’t you just knock me out and fix my brain            - Can you show me how to change my own mind
I MUST but I CAN’T…….                                          - So what CAN you do..?
Argue strongly and eloquently for problem...              - Smile and accept an easy solution……..
Problem is in fine detail, but solution is vague            - See solution in fine detail, problem as ‘blurred’..
Asking ‘why’……                                                         - Ask ‘how’
There’s something wrong with me…                           - Maybe there’s not, and you can now stop looking
‘Trying’ to ….                                                               - Just doing
You can’t help me unless you ‘understand’ ...            - Understanding the problem is not the solution…..
I’m a bad person, how can I expect any help?            - Separate the ‘person’ from their ‘behaviour’….
Paranoia - fear bad things being planned                    - Pronoia! - suspect good things are on their way
I wish, hope, need, am desperate for….                      - I can, I must, I will…
Nothing really works in the end….                             - Accept good changes, encourage to get more!
Change is hard, difficult, complicated….                    - Change is easy, simple, and fun!
I am basically flawed, stupid, wrong, broken              - People are perfect on the inside!
This stuff won’t work for me….                                   - Probably only thing that might work!
Victim mentality                                                           - Feeling in control
Fear might work then go badly wrong..                       - Might just keep getting better!
I’m probably your worst client ever………                - Do most people change this easily?
Need big change now, don’t believe can get..            - Accept some change. Then more and more….
Remembering bad stuff protects me….                     - The past is over, you survived and are safe now!
Being ‘realistic’                                                           - Asking how helpful thinking that way has been…
Living in the past                                                         - Focussing on the future
It’s all too much to deal with……….                          - Taking small steps, one at a time….
I must be mad                                                              - Truly mad people don’t even consider that!
