Fear of Open Spaces Phobia

Agoraphobia is an intense fear of open spaces, and comes in many forms. It can be simply very high and wide-open spaces that trigger the phobic response, or the sufferer may fear a panic attack when being away from home, alone.

Typical trigger situations include bridges, crowds, queues,  concerts and rallies.

Twice as many women as men seek help for this condition, but this may possibly be due to men's reluctance to seek assistance,  or a greater use of drugs and alcohol to mask the problem.

There is some suggestion that previous benzodiazepine use ( such as tranquilisers and sleeping tablets) may contribute to the onset of agoraphobia, but this not yet proven. The symptoms are very similar to a panic attack, in that sufferers feel a strong desire to maintain a normal outward composure, while experience a strong fear response - trembling legs, desire to seek safety, dry mouth, sweating, need to visit the bathroom, and fear of fainting. These feelings will be much stronger than any other anxiety or panic feelings.

Agoraphobia is now easily resolved. One former phobic gleefully went shopping on her own just to celebrate - after a single one treatment session. After the next (and final) session she travelled abroad to a destination she had always wanted to visit, and was overcome with delight!
